1 John 3:11-24 “Comforted by Our Love for the Church”
John's writings are characterized by an "eschatological perspective," i.e., he speaks of people as they are related to their ultimate destinations - heaven & hell. This means that all people are recipients of either truth or lies, standing in light or in darkness, in a state of life or death, filled with love or hatred, receptive to the Apostles or false prophets, allied with God or Satan, Christ or Antichrist, the Holy Spirit or deceitful spirits, etc. Whereas the world is characterized by hatred and murder, following the life of its forefather Cain, the Church is characterized by love (for God and one another) and endures afflictions like its forefather Abel and its Savior, Jesus Christ. Our love for the Church and its spiritual well-being is evidence that we have received spiritual life and that we know the truth.
