These final verses close the first half of Paul’s letter. God has provided salvation in Christ: election in eternity past (1:3-7), forgiveness in the present (1:8-10), and glory in the future (1:11-14). He is the source of their faith, hope, and love (1:15-23), and He raised them from the pit of spiritual death to seat them in the heavenly places (2:1-7). By God’s grace we are saved (2:8-10). As if reconciling sinners to Himself weren’t amazing enough, He is reconciling mankind (Jews & Gentiles) in His Church (2:11-18). They share the same citizenship, are part of the same family, stand on the same foundation, and are stones in the same spiritual temple (2:19-22). Through suffering, God was continuing to work out His all-wise plan of bringing sinners into His kingdom (3:1-13) and bringing them to maturity (3:14-19). To God alone be the glory!
